Mulu Caves 2011


Mulu Caves 2011 was the 19th Anglo-Sarawak Expedition to Gunung Mulu National Park and operated in the field between 15th February and 30th March 2011. The expedition based itself at National Park headquarters for the first two weeks before moving up to a base at Camp 5 for the remaining month. The team was led by Tim Allen and included a total of seventeen members from the UK, together with a number of participants from our hosts at Sarawak Forestry. The expedition was further assisted by National Park Management, staff and local people.

Matienzo 50 años de espeleología

Editado por Juan Corrin y Peter Smith y publicado en agosto de 2010 en las celebraciones de los 50 años de exploraciones de Matienzo.

Un volumen de 320 páginas, en inglés y castellano, que detalla las exploraciones en Matienzo, desde los precursores de los años 1960, pero detallando especialmente las del interclub británico desde 1970 hasta 2010.
Completan las exploraciones con otros capítulos dedicados al espeleobuceo, la geología, geomorfología y la arqueología.

Se incluye un mapa geológico formato A1 de la zona de Arredondo, Matienzo y Ogarrio. También se incluye un DVD con vídeos, presentaciones, fotografías y, sobre todo, con la situación de más de 3.300 cavidades sobre la aplicación de Google Map.

Evolução e Biodiversidade escondidas: grutas e cavernas

No âmbito do ciclo de conferências Biologia na Noite, evento organizado pelo Departamento de Biologia da Universidade de Aveiro, teremos a oportunidade única de ouvir um dos maiores especialistas mundiais em Bioespeleologia, o Professor Catedrático Pedro Oromí.

A conferência terá lugar no dia 6 de Junho (segunda-feira) às 21h30 no auditório do Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Aveiro e terá como título: Evolução e Biodiversidade escondidas: grutas e cavernas.

Francesc Español

Español (segundo por la izquierda) el año 1932.


"Pasaron seis años desde que Francesc Español descubrió lo que parecía una nueva especie de coleóptero cavernícola hasta que Jeannel lo corroboró bautizándolo como Speophilus españoli. Fue el impulso definitivo que centró su interés por la zoología en la entomología. Una faceta con la que llegó a Baleares en los años 30 para catalogar el universo de endemismos de las cuevas pitiusas.

La vocación de Francesc Español estaba clara desde su adolescencia. Nació en Valls (Tarragona) en 1907 y ya cuando estudiaba Bachillerato en la misma localidad, empezó a interesarse por los insectos. Su colección de coleópteros y hemípteros llegaba a las cuarenta cajas, material que años después iría a parar al Museo de Zoología de Barcelona.

Poco después se centraría en el estudio de la fauna cavernícola. Tenía sólo 17 años cuando, en 1924 y en la cueva de Traça (Tarragona), descubriría su primera nueva especie. El ejemplar fue enviado al entomólogo francés René Jeannel al Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de París. El experto tardaría seis años en confirmar el hallazgo y bautizarlo como Speophilus españoli. La espera no desanimó a Español. Aquel mismo año comenzó a colaborar con el Museo de Zoología de Barcelona, y ni siquiera durante su servicio militar en Marruecos, de 1926 a 1929, cesó en su recolección de insectos. Cuando entró en la universidad de Barcelona en 1931 se decantó por Farmacia, sus estudios de entomología continuaron en la Institución Catalana d’Història Natural. (...)"

'NORTHERN KARST SYSTEMS IN OUR CHANGING ENVIRONMENT'

to be held 5-10 September 2011

The International Conference 'Northern karst systems in our changing environment' will focus on the problems of northern karst territories, their natural character, details of their genesis and geography, structure and dynamics of karst system components, research on cave glaciation, changes in karst systems under the impact of global climate change and the issues of karst landscape and cave conservation. The conference will be held at the State Nature Reserve «Pinezhsky» near the small town of Pinega in the north of Russia, Arkhangelsk area. During the field excursions participants will be able to see the local gypsum-karst landscape and caves that are the world’s single example of north-taiga gypsum karst.

PRELIMINARY CONFERENCE TIMETABLE
5 September. Gathering of participants in the town of Arkhangelsk. Travelling by coach to the conference venue of Golubino, stopping on route to visit the open-air wooden architecture museum of 'Malye Karely'.
6 September. Registration of participants. Opening of the Conference. Plenary presentations. Reception banquet and brief presentation about the Pinega Region. Video films.
7 September. Plenary presentations and thematic sessions. Excursion to the 'Golubinsky Proval' cave and to the karst canyon.
8 September. Thematic sessions and poster presentations.
9 September. Field excursion. Evening picnic with bonfire and barbeque.
10 September. Participants travel back to Archangelsk by coach.
