Cave Depth Record Achieved Using KISS Rebreather

Expedition diver Jason Mallinson describes a record-setting dive into the Western Hemisphere’s deepest cave, using the Classic KISS rebreather.

Mexico’s Sistema Huautla is perhaps one of the most complex of the world’s deep caves. With 17 entrances and numerous independent and physically demanding deep routes, dropping nearly a mile into the earth, this dark labyrinth requires extensive rope work and multiple days of effort to reach the lower depths of the system. The last extension to the cave took place in 1994, when Dr William Stone used his self-designed CIS Lunar rebreather to pass what was then considered the terminal sump. Staging their dive from a portable platform suspended over a pool of water, the transiting a flooded tunnel and went on to discovered some 3.3km (2 miles) of new passage, but were ultimately stopped by Sump 9.

Cave Converter

A new version of my Cave Converter tool is now available. It converts between various cave survey file formats. Primarily to enable users of DistoX devices to get their existing data into PocketTopo, and their new survey data out of PocketTopo and into Survex format. Help and download link on the home page. Source code available under GNU GPLv3 license.

A summary of the changes in this release:
- Added support for nested series in the data model. Survex reader and writer no longer flatten the survey series hierarchy when series are inside other series.
- Fixed issue where Survex output files put data inside duplicated begin/end blocks.
- Improved series naming in PocketTopo converted data. Series now have the series number as
their name rather than the full cave name and series number, so the name is not duplicated in the outer series name and inner series names. The outer series name is now the full name from the input file (previously any numbers on the end of the name were removed).
- PocketTopo converted data links to series not included in the PocketTopo file now use the correct series number and station number for the linked external series instead of dummy data.
- Toporobot format generation is much faster, and handles more complex cave surveys which could crash the converter in previous versions.
- Fixed crash in Toporobot writer when converting directly from PocketTopo format.

No Place on Earth

No Place on Earth OFFICIAL Trailer

NO PLACE ON EARTH brings to light the untold story of thirty-eight Ukrainian Jews who survived World War II by living in caves for eighteen months, the longest-recorded sustained underground survival. Built upon interviews with former cave inhabitants, as well as Chris Nicola, the caving enthusiast who unearthed the story, NO PLACE ON EARTH is an extraordinary testament to ingenuity, willpower and endurance against all odds.

Summer School on Speleothem Science

We are very pleased to announce you that the registration for the "Summer School on Speleothem Science" will be open from February 1st to April 1st.

The summer school will be held on 28 July - 3 August 2013 in Heidelberg, Germany, and is aimed at an international audience. PhD students, young scientists and undergraduates that are active, or otherwise interested in this field of research, are kindly invited to join.

The “Summer School on Speleothem Science” – S4 – is organised by a group of 20 PhD students specialized in speleothem research. As our field of study is rapidly advancing, it seemed important to hold a summer school on speleothem science where students and high-profile senior researchers can share their experience and meet the expressed needs of the young scientists in this research field. This will provide a comprehensive overview of the most current and innovative techniques used, or being developed.

Lectures will be combined with discussions and seminars on a range of relevant speleothem related topics, providing a lively and comprehensive summer school. Practical exercises and experiments will also be held.

Some fields that will be covered are:
  • O and C isotope proxies
  • Geochemistry/Monitoring/Trace-Elements/Proxies
  • Techniques AMS/ICPMS/SIMS/Laser
  • Statistics (Age models and Time series analysis)
  • Frontiers of Paleoclimate Research
  • Fieldtrip to the Herbstlabyrinth cave system

Poster sessions will also be held during this week and young scientists will be able to present their work, discuss and troubleshoot the challenges of their own research.

À poster of the S4 (5.6 Mb) can be downloaded using this link. We would greatly appreciate if you could find the time to forward it to researchers and students you think would be interested and/or place it on a relevant blackboard at your institution for interested students to find it there.

III Subterranean Biology Iberian Meeting

The Natural History Museum of Barcelona (Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona (MCNB)) is organizing the 3rd Subterranean Biology Iberian Meeting (“III Encuentro Ibérico de Biología Subterránea”), which will take place in Barcelona (MCNB) from the 2nd to 5th of October 2013.

All participants are invited to submit the extended versions of their contributions in the III EIBS for a peer‐review in the journals edited (AMZ, ABC) by the MCNB.

Background of the event

Arthropod collections of the MCNB have more than 1.500.000 specimens, with almost 4.000 type specimens, from which a considerable proportion are cave-dwelling fauna.

In this sense, the collection of cave-dwelling fauna play an essential role in the collections, because of its historical and scientific value, representing more than 1 century of research in caves. Although other research lines and by extension collections have suffered fluctuations, the research line of cave-dwelling fauna has remained quite stable on time. This collection was initially started by Zariquiey family (1930s), Dr. Francesc Español curator and head of the Museum, kept on working on that research line, which was followed by Oleguer Escolà (Curator of Arthropod Collections until 2009) and the current technician team.

For all of these reasons, the MCNB has decided to take it a further step and organizing the next 3rdSubterranean Biology Iberian meeting “III Encuentro Ibérico de Biología Subterránea”, which will take place in Barcelona (Blue Museum, MCNB).

This meeting is specially addressed to Subterranean Biology in the Mediterranean context and hopefully will offer a space of collaboration in order to share experiences and learn a lot about other colleagues projects.

Provisional Scientific Programme

1. The cave‐inhabiting fauna, past and present of its species richness and diversity.

2. Origin and evolution of cave‐dwelling animals: interpretation of the current distribution from the phylogeography.

3. The photoautotrophic organisms (bryophytes, lichens, algae, bacteria) at the limit of light.

4. Saprovore organisms in caves and other subterranean habitats (fungi, bacteria).

5. Bacterial functional groups in caves (autrotrophic, heterotrophic and chemolithoautotrophic).

6. Recent advances in cave‐inhabiting vertebrates and invertebrates.

International Symposium on Karst Water under Global Change Pressure

International Symposiums on Karst Water under Global Change Pressure
8-15 April 2013, Guilin, China

Karst water has always been an important water resource of cities around the world. Today in China karst water contributes to a quarter of all groundwater resources. Majority of the public water supplied to the city of Rome comes from the Peschiera karst spring. Nearly half percent of all water consumed in Florida is karst water.

However karst water has intense hydrological variety, and high heterogeneity, which makes the water utilization very difficult. Karst water resources are extremely vulnerable to climate changes, ecological degradation, pollution and soil erosion. These can have a rapid impact on it.

In recent times the study of karst water has been highlighted internationally. IAH established the karst commission in 1960. The 12thIAH conference (1975) in USA and 21st IAH conference (1988) in China selected karst water as the topic. In Europe tens of countries contributed to the COST65 and COST620 projects in 1990-2004, to perform karst water vulnerability assessment and mapping. IGCP513 ‘Global study of karst aquifers and water resources’ and IGCP598 ‘Environmental change and sustainability in karst system’ by UNESCO/IUGS also focused on karst water resources.

Under the impact of global climate changes, extreme climatic events are occurring at higher frequency. For example, the karst area in Southern China and Northern China suffered from severe drought in 2010 and 2011, which significantly impacted the amount of drinking water available to millions of people.

Therefore evaluation of climate change and its impact on karst water resources and efficient use of karst water has become a challenge that we are all now facing. The International Research Center on Karst under the Auspices of UNESCO (IRCK) and IAH karst commission are currently in the process of organizing the “International Symposiums of Karst Water under Global Change Pressure” scheduled on April 2013 in Guilin. We hope this meeting will be a platform of exchange study results and dealing with common problems.

We invite you to join us in Guilin and hope that you will have a pleasurable, informative, and productive experience.

Best wishes,
Daoxian Yuan
Director of academic committee of IRCK
