Resumo
The Research Project of the Heidelberg Academy of sciences has a mayor focus on the study of climate variability during the Holocene. Our favoured archives are stalagmites because they can be dated very precisely applying the Th/U-Method. Growth rates of stalagmites range between 10 and 100µm/year. The stable isotope composition of the carbonate depending on precipitation and temperature and can be determined with a very high resolution down to few 100 µm, corresponding to less than a decade. I will show our recent results on stalagmites from Central and Northern Europe. From these data we infer that during the last 10,000 years there have been wetter and drier periods than the present day, that significantly influenced earlier cultures.
